About

The Longhorn Cowfish is a distinctive and charismatic marine fish, easily recognized by its box-shaped body and two prominent horn-like protrusions above its eyes and two smaller ones near its tail. They are slow-moving and generally peaceful but can release a potent toxin (ostracitoxin) when severely stressed or threatened, which can be fatal to other tank inhabitants in an enclosed system. Due to this unique defense mechanism and their potential size, they require a large, well-filtered, and mature marine aquarium with stable water parameters. They are not suitable for reef tanks with sensitive corals or invertebrates due to their diet and potential for toxin release.
