About

The Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos, commonly known as the Maingano Cichlid, is a vibrant and active Mbuna cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, Africa. Known for its striking horizontal blue and black stripes, this species adds a dynamic presence to a cichlid aquarium. Males and females typically exhibit similar coloration, though males may be more intensely colored, especially when breeding. They are a relatively aggressive and territorial species, requiring a well-structured tank with plenty of rocks, caves, and hiding spots to minimize conflict. Maingano Cichlids are primarily herbivorous in the wild, feeding on algae and biofilm, but will accept a varied omnivorous diet in captivity. They are best kept in a species-specific tank or with other robust Lake Malawi cichlids, ideally with one male to several females to disperse aggression.
